South Carolina wants to take GOP convention from Florida
04/01/2011
Gosh those folks in South Carolina are a cranky bunch.
They are having a fit over the fact that Florida Republicans are still planning to have their 2012 presidential primary in January.
So now South Carolina Republicans are demanding that the RNC yank the 2012 national convention out of Tampa.
Iowa has joined South Carolina in an effort to force Florida Republicans to back down.
Karen Floyd, chairman of South Carolina Republican Party says that if Florida refuse to move its primary to March or later, than the convention should be moved to Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, Missouri, Michigan or North Carolina.
"I do not make any of these suggestions lightly, or with the notion that this idea will not be met with considerable resistance," Floyd writes to fellow RNC committee folks.
"Even if we choose to take this action as a way to sanction Florida, I am fully cognizant that it may not ultimately dissuade them from the path that they appear to be on -- but as a Party, we must send a strong message that flouting RNC rules and processes will certainly not be met with a reward so significant as the hosting of our national Convention."
". . . If Florida refuses to move its primary date into compliance with RNC rules, I am respectfully requesting that the Committee convene a special task force to select a new site for the 2012 Convention outside the state of Florida."
In the RAGBRAI state - Iowa, GOP chairman Matt Strawn is backing South Carolina.
"The contempt that Florida legislators hold not only for the RNC 2012 rules, but also for the RNC members who approved these rules, is astonishing. To reward this arrogance with our national convention is a great disservice to the Republican activists, donors and elected officials nationwide who support the RNC," Strawn said.
"If Florida refuses to move its primary date into compliance with RNC rules, that consequence should be the re-opening of the process to select the site of the 2012 RNC Convention. I join South Carolina Chairwoman Floyd today in beginning preparations to request that the Committee convene a special task force to select a new site for the 2012 Convention outside the state of Florida.
Will Sunshine State Republicans back down?
Will the RNC seriously consider yanking the convention?
Are South Carolina and Iowa fighting for the presidential process or the millions of dollars that will be spent in their state primaries?
