Are we only getting half the story about Rick Scott?
07/22/2010
While campaigning in South Florida, Attorney General Bill McCollum had this observation about Rick Scott.
"He can say what he wants to say, but all you know about him is what he says in his TV ads. I have a record. There's no record for him other than the Columbia/HCA mess."
McCollum raises an interesting point. What do we really know about Rick Scott?
Well if you don't know about Scott's experience as CEO of Columbia/HCA, please turn in your voter registration card. But that is only part of the story of Rick Scott.
The media has spent considerable time exploring Scott's record at Columbia/HCA. Where the media has failed so far, is in exploring this statement that Scott repeatedly makes in his campaign appearances and television ads - "mistakes were made" and "I learned from those mistakes."
Did he? That question and others have not been deeply explored.
What has Scott accomplished since leaving Columbia/HCA in 1997? What have been his business practices? Is he successful? What have business and community leaders said about the post-HCA Scott?Did he learn from his mistakes? Is he a better businessman than he was 13 years ago? Does he do a better job of making sure his employees do not cut corners? Or has Scott continued the same practices that got him in trouble more than a decade ago?
There is an entire chapter of Scott's life that is missing from the public debate. Did Scott learn from his mistakes or not?
